Conmed Healthcare Management, Inc. (CONMED) (NYSE Amex: CONM) is acutely aware that mental and behavioral health services are critically necessary in correctional facilities, in addition to the somatic healthcare that CONMED brings to its clients.
On November 4, 2008, CONMED acquired Correctional Mental Health Services, LLC (CMHS) as a wholly owned subsidiary of CONMED. CMHS, founded by its President, Stephen B. Goldberg, M.D., in 2002, developed a unique, innovative and cost-effective management approach designed specifically to serve a jail’s mentally ill population. CMHS’s programs utilize licensed providers, incorporate the training of corrections officers, and have innovated the use of telepsychiatry. The CMHS management approach has become the standard of care throughout Maryland. At the time of the acquisition, CMHS had 15 mental and behavioral services contracts in 13 counties in Maryland.
As a result of this acquisition, CMHS became the primary managing and clinical entity for all of CONMED’s mental and behavioral healthcare needs, and its services can be provided to Facilities in conjunction with CONMED’s somatic healthcare services, or as a stand-alone mental health service to any Facility.
Together, CONMED and CMHS bring the highest quality, most comprehensive, fully integrated and cost-effective mental health and somatic healthcare services to the correctional community.
