Successful Transition - Chesapeake City Jail, Virginia
Conmed Healthcare Management, Incorporated, was awarded the medical contract for the Chesapeake City Jail in Chesapeake, Virginia on March 19, 2008 with an effective start date of April 16, 2008, allowing less than thirty days to begin providing Medical, Psychiatric and Dental services in addition to full healthcare staffing coverage, Pharmacy services and out-of facility specialist and hospital care.
Conmed began investigating employment interest by qualified professionals well before the contract was awarded by utilizing its ongoing comprehensive recruitment program which, in part, includes networking with area hospitals and universities, professional societies as well as advertising in the print media and on dedicated Internet sites. Once awarded the contract, members of the Conmed Transition Team, which consists of the Chief Medical Officer, Vice President - Operations, Vice President - Human Resources, Senior Director -Business Development and Integration, Senior Director-Quality and Standards, Senior Director-Mental and Behavioral Health, Transition Team Leader, Manager, Quality Assurance and IT Consultant, were at the facility the same day. Members of the team remained on site each week prior to the start date, recruiting and interviewing existing staff and new applicants, completing background investigations, conducting orientation and training for new staff, reviewing all standards and compliance, establishing and integrating the IT system and reviewing all existing high priority cases within the inmate population.
Additionally, during this short transition period, the Transition Team established accounts for Lab Services, Third Party Administration for out-of-facility services costs, Office Supplies, Medical Waste removal, Mobile X-Ray services, Pharmacy, IT, Medical Supplies and Oxygen Supplier. Also, an effective working relationship was confirmed with the local hospital.
A total of 39 employees were hired to fill full time, part time and PRN positions to include RN’s, LPN’s, CMA’s, Medical Records Clerks, Dental Assistant, Health Service Administrator, Director of Nursing, Physician, Dentist, Psychiatrists, Psychologist and Social Workers. Prior to Conmed’s award of the contract, 19 agency nurses were being used to fill positions within the medical department. As a result of our proactive recruitment program and the concerted efforts of the Transition Team, the use of agency personnel has not been necessary.
Conmed worked closely and collaboratively with the jail administration and staff, local vendors, suppliers and the local hospital to ensure a smooth, seamless and successful transition for the provision of quality correctional healthcare services on an uninterrupted basis at the Chesapeake City Jail.

May 31 – June 3, 2008 MCAA Annual Summer Meeting
The 33rd Annual Summer Meeting of the Maryland Correctional Administrators Association (MCAA), May 31 – June 3, 2008, at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland will once again be supported by Conmed Healthcare Management, Inc. In addition to exhibiting at this conference for many years, Conmed will again conduct a 2-day educational meeting for our Health Service Administrators (HSAs) while the MCAA members are participating in their sessions. The agenda for the HSAs will include review of updated policies and procedures, financial analysis and reporting and techniques for collection and reporting of clinical statistics.
By exhibiting at this meeting, Conmed will have the opportunity to showcase our services to those people with the authority to make critical decisions for their facilities. The MCAA meeting also provides a wonderful opportunity for our HSAs to mingle in a casual setting with the administrators and senior officers of the sixteen (16) county detention centers we currently serve in Maryland, especially during the MCAA Annual Banquet when the accomplishments of the Employee of the Year from each of the correctional facilities will be recognized. Conmed will again sponsor the plaques being presented to each Employee of the Year.
